He-Man and G.I Joe will battle for supremacy in Ubisoft's Toy Soldiers: War Chest

Ubisoft has announced four of the eight plastic armies that will be going up against each other in this Summer’s Toy Soldiers: War Chest, and a couple of them are very familiar.

First up is He-Man. Yes, everyone’s favourite semi-naked cartoon barbarian leads a force of Eternium warriors from the saddle of his Battle Cat – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d write.

He’ll find himself up against another iconic 80’s brand, a special mission force codenamed G.I. Joe. Lead by field commander Duke, they prefer tiny, plastic guns to sabre-toothed cats, the idiots. Both of these licensed armies will be unique to the Hall of Fame[b/] version of the game, though you’ll be able to buy them for $4.99 separately.

Rounding things off are Phantom and her Ghost Company, a troop of sci-fi warriors “highly skilled in the art of guerrilla warfare”, and Dark Lord’s band of villainous monsters and warriors, who rely on speed and easy access to dragons. These two armies will join the previously revealed WWI-era German Empire forces of the Kaiser, and the garish fairies and unicorns of Starbright in the game’s standard edition.

This is going to be a very strange little title, though I have to admit it sounds like a lot of fun. Ubisoft promises to reveal two more licensed armies, to be included in the deluxe Hall of Fame[b/] edition of the game, at a later date. Toy Soldiers: War Chest Hall of Fame Edition will set you back $29.99, while the regular version of the game will be digital-download only for $14.99.
