The wait for Midnight’s first major content update is nearly over. Blizzard has confirmed that Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula’tek, goes live on August 11, 2026, bringing the new Coiled Isle zone, a fresh dungeon, the return of world bosses as Lairs, and a great deal more. Season 2 then follows one week later, on August 18, opening the new raid and the competitive season proper.
That one-week gap is the key thing to understand about this patch. Rather than dropping everything at once, Blizzard is splitting the rollout into two steps, and the split has real consequences for what you should be doing right now.
The Two-step Rollout, Explained
Here is how the launch actually works.
August 11 is patch day, and it is also the day Season 1 ends. The update itself goes live, along with the content that is not tied to the seasonal structure. That means the new dungeon, the first tier of Lairs, the reworked Delves and the new Prey season all open, but the competitive Season 2 has not started yet.
August 11 to 18 is effectively a week of between-seasons downtime. You can explore the new zone and run the fresh content, but Mythic+, the raid and ranked PvP are still on the way.
August 18 is when Season 2 begins in full, bringing the Venomous Abyss raid, the new Mythic+ season, PvP Season 2 and the Bountiful Delves.
What Arrives on August 11
Patch day is far from quiet, even without the seasonal content. The headline addition is the Coiled Isle, a corrupted island off the coast of Zul’Aman where the troll Zul’jan has freed the broods of the serpent god Ula’tek. Expect a new outdoor zone with its own events, rewards and progression to work through.
The new dungeon, Altar of Fangs, opens on Heroic and Mythic 0 difficulty (Mythic 0 drops 292 item level gear), and it joins a completely fresh dungeon rotation that also pulls in Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Kings’ Rest, Temple of Sethraliss and Ruby Life Pools.
The most interesting new system is Lairs, an evolution of the old world boss. Instead of a tap-and-hope open-world fight, Lairs are dedicated instanced encounters with scaling difficulty, flexing all the way up to Mythic for 15 to 25 players. They are found at fixed locations with a summoning stone outside, much like Delves, and the first one, the Tidebound Grotto, features a new World Boss named Nymrissa Wavecaller. It opens at World difficulty on the 11th and unlocks its Normal, Heroic and Mythic tiers with Season 2.
Rounding out patch day are three new Delves, including the Venomfall Deeps Nemesis Delve, and a new Prey season on the Coiled Isle in its Normal and Hard modes.
What Arrives on August 18
Season 2 is where the patch shifts into gear. The centrepiece is The Venomous Abyss, an eight-boss raid that sends players into the Vaults of Atal’Utek to stop Zul’jan before Ula’tek’s power is unleashed, culminating in a showdown with Ula’tek herself. It opens on Normal, Heroic and Mythic along with the first wing of Raid Finder, with the remaining LFR wings rolling out weekly through September 8. The first two hundred guilds worldwide to clear it on Mythic earn the Hall of Fame Feat of Strength.
Alongside the raid, Mythic+ Season 2 begins, PvP Season 2 opens, and Delves gain their Bountiful versions and Keys. In other words, August 18 is when the grind everyone actually plans their autumn around truly starts.
Before the Reset: Finishing Season 1 by August 11
Here is the part that is easy to overlook in the excitement, and it is time-sensitive. Because Season 1 ends when the patch lands on August 11, anything tied to the current season locks or becomes far harder to get on that date, not on the 18th. If it is on your list, patch day is your deadline.
The rewards that disappear or become Feats of Strength include the Season 1 Mythic+ Keystone Master mount, its title and the dungeon teleport portals, the Cutting Edge and Ahead of the Curve raid achievements, and the full PvP reward ladder, including the Elite transmog set, the Gladiator mount and the seasonal titles. Once Season 2 starts, the Season 1 versions are gone for good.
The trouble is that the things most worth chasing are exactly the ones that take the most time. Climbing the last few hundred points of Mythic+ rating, organising a Mythic raid group for a final Cutting Edge push, or grinding out a PvP rating before the ladder freezes are not the kind of goals you knock out on the last afternoon. With a hard cutoff on August 11, players who are short on time but still want those rewards sometimes turn to a World of Warcraft boost to close the gap on a rating push or a raid clear before the season locks. However you approach it, the message is the same: if you want a Season 1 reward, treat patch day as the finish line and plan backward from it.
Looking Ahead to the Coiled Isle
Curse of Ula’tek is shaping up to be a substantial first chapter for Midnight. Between the new zone, the Altar of Fangs dungeon, the reimagined world bosses, expanded Delves and the eight-boss Venomous Abyss raid, there is a genuine spread of content here for raiders, keystone pushers, PvPers and solo players alike.
For now, the calendar is the thing to keep in mind. August 11 closes the book on Season 1 and opens the Coiled Isle, and August 18 kicks off Season 2 in earnest. Whether you are wrapping up old goals or gearing up for the descent into the Venomous Abyss, the next few weeks are going to be busy ones in Azeroth.
