Total War: Warhammer 40,000 combines turn-based campaign play with large-scale real-time battles, the formula the Total War series has used since Shogun: Total War (2000), and applies it for the first time to the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Four factions have been announced. Each is built around its own set of lore-derived mechanics, arsenal, war machines, and battlefield tactics, so campaigns play out very differently depending on who you command.
| Faction | Description |
|---|---|
![]() |
Genetically engineered super-soldiers, deployed in small numbers but individually worth hundreds of ordinary troops. |
![]() |
Vast, undisciplined green hordes that exist to fight and overrun entire star systems. |
![]() |
A declining ancient species that once held the galaxy and now fights to avoid extinction. |
![]() |
Humanity's largest army, fighting through attrition rather than finesse. It has access to heavy war machines too. |
The game was first revealed at The Game Awards 2025, closing out Total War's 25th anniversary year. It's the fourth Total War title made with Games Workshop, following the Total War: Warhammer fantasy trilogy, and the first to leave the Warhammer Fantasy setting for the far (and dark) future of the 41st Millennium.
It is also a first for the series in two other respects: It runs on a new in-house engine called Warcore, and it will be the first mainline Total War released on consoles, launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S alongside PC.
No release date or release window has been announced yet. See our Release Date page for the full timeline of confirmed milestones and major announcements.
